How to Uninstall Windows XP

How to Uninstall Windows: If upgraded your computer to Windows from a previous version of Windows, Windows Setup Wizard may have backed up your current operating system. (The windows backup files are named Backup.cab and Boot.cab and have been stored in C:\Undo directory, that's assuming that Windows is installed on your C:\ drive.) If it is, you may uninstall Windows and return your old Windows OS (operating system). Be sure to backup all of your data files before you start to uninstall Windows. Or you will be sorry.

Note: If you have made any changed your partitions or drives since installing Windows, you usually can't uninstall it.

Follow these steps to uninstall Windows!
1. Go to >Choose Start >Control Panel >Add or Remove Programs.
2. Look for Windows Uninstall, if Windows Uninstall appears in the Currently Installed Programs, then you can uninstall it.
3. Now click on Windows Uninstall. Additional information should appears.
4. Now click on the Change/Remove button. You should see the Uninstall Windows dialog box.
5. Now choose Uninstall Windows and click on Continue.
You need to follow all of the directions on your screen. After the uninstall process is finished, your computer restarts and runs your previous Windows OS (operating system).

Note: Uninstalling Windows doesn't delete your all your data files. However, most programs that you have installed after you installed Windows probably won't work. All you have to do to fix this, just reinstall them again. If you have created any documents or files, they should still be stored in C:\Documents and Settings\username\.

Although it is uncommon, some computers lack the power to run Windows XP. Others contain hardware additions that are not compatible. If that happens, all kinds of errors can occur. In such a case, you can either upgrade your computer or uninstall Windows XP, reverting to an older operating system. It's a time consuming process, but can be done with very few complications.

Instructions

  1. Set your computer to start in safe mode and restart it. You can also simply start your computer and press the "F8" key while it begins to load. You will be able to access safe mode from the startup utilities.

  1. Be sure to sign into the computer with an account that has administrator privileges. Only the system administrator has the authority to uninstall Windows XP.

  1. Click "Start" to access the Start menu.

  1. Click on the "Control Panel" icon.

  1. Double-click the "Add or Remove Programs" application. This will load a list of programs that you can choose to uninstall.

  1. Select "Uninstall Windows XP" from the Add/Remove list. This will begin the uninstallation process.

  1. Reinstall an older version of Windows or the newer Windows XP if the "Uninstall Windows XP" link is not present in the Add/Remove list.

  1. Note that you need to backup files, as the Windows installation disc will not necessarily be able to detect the files you wish to keep.

Tips & Warnings

a)      Consider upgrading from Windows XP to Windows Vista. You are not required to uninstall Windows XP, and can simply have Windows Vista overwrite and incorporate Windows XP files. The transfer is fairly simple and saves you from having to create boot discs and extensive backups.

b)      Files you installed prior to upgrading to Windows XP will be saved on the hard drive during the revert. Backing up these files is not necessary. Those installed after the upgrade, however, will likely be lost unless you back them up.

c)      Backup your important files. When you uninstall Windows XP, you are going to lose file extensions, directories and a lot of other organizational and structural information. Save your important files and put them into Windows once the uninstall is complete.
